I think this is the ‘Santa Maria’, sister ship of the ‘Santa Barbara’, built by Furness at Haverton Hill for Grace Lines. Both were launched in 1928.
In this photo it looks like she’s being towed stern first down river towards the Tranporter Bridge.
There’s another great photo of her that’s been published a few times and would have been taken only minutes later from around dock point. She had just passed under the bridge and was catching some low morning sun.
