What year was this. I was in the choir too. Mrs Rusk was in charge. I always remember the Alice in Wonderland illustration in the main hall. Also the outside toilets. Oh and getting a tetanus jag and nitty Nora.
Think it was 1969 I was in the choir too, can see myself on the photo. That year we won everything at Whitby it was amazing, everyone was so proud. Mrs. Baxter on the left choir teacher and Mrs Rusk on the right.
Remember lovely home cooked school dinners, warm milk in the summer and frozen topped milk in the winter, ha ha.
Happy days!
Hi Susan, I have a recording of the school choir which my sister and I are currently arranging to have digitalised (🤞🏻🤞🏻the tape has stood the test of time – we’ll know shortly). If it goes well I will be happy to share the details with you if you are interested. Best wishes, Judith Purvis.
My sister Judith (tall one at the back) and I (5th from the left, front row) are in that picture. I remember Mrs Baxter who instilled a life-long love for singing in me. I’m still singing today with a choral society and my diction is still excellent as a result of early training from Mrs Baxter. I remember “Bessy was a Black Cat” being made to enunciate every consonant clearly. I also remember her getting us to watch her direction, “Look at me, I’m beautiful” she would say. Happy memories.
Mrs Baxter was a professional. She saw and heard something in me that I hadn’t known. She once stopped playing the piano in morning assembly to ask ‘who is that singing so well’ and I put my head down but others pointed me out! I still sing everyday and as Sting often says ‘Music is its own reward’ and that is so true. Mrs Baxter and her choirs however won many awards and plaudits. I remember her now in rehearsals instructing us all on how to properly perform. That it wasn’t just our ability to sing but also our demeanour that was so important. She could spot a good singer from a mile away though!
This photo was slightly before my time. A couple of years earlier. I remember enjoying visiting and entertaining audiences at various venues around Middlesbrough. However I could never get over my shyness and failed to be available for the recording of Mr Peter Canwell’s ‘Dat Man Moses’. I regret that very much. I’ll always remember Mrs Baxter and still thank her for her efforts to improve me. When I sing now, I often sing with her in mind. Its got to be good though!

Jon, I suspect we were told that we were going to be in the choir 🙂
If anyone would like to download digitised recordings of the choir the year we won the prizes, you can do that from here up to 60 days from 15th September
