My grandfather, who played for the Boro, and who had to retire early through injury, ran the Navigation. I understand from family members that he had a special licence to allow him to serve the guys coming off shift at the nearby steel works. There was also a story that the pub had a ghost – a story covered by the Northern Echo a few years back but refuted by family members.
I’ve never been to the pub but should do really – I’ll put in on my bucket list
