As with many town-centre buildings erected by the Cooperative Societies and along with their ‘give something back’ policy towards local communities, this building contained a large interior space named the ‘Victoria Hall’, freely available for lectures, functions and dancing.
I recall my mother telling me of her regular attendances at dances held there whilst a 16yr-old. This after her family moved to Croydon Rd, from N.Ormesby during 1940. She also mentioned how devastated she and her friends were, when the store was destroyed in 1942, -they then having to find another dancing venue at weekends!
