Looking at this photo I’m guessing it was taken before the coke ovens went into production as everything is far too clean.
I served part of my apprenticeship on these ovens in the early 70’s, and returned there in 1976 until they ceased production.
It was a black,hot, dirty & smelly place to work and the lads working the doors and oven tops were in the thick of it.
We used to live in Laing Street, Grangetown in 1955, in the shadow of the ovens & our Mam reckoned the washing often came in blacker than when she put it out.
