This was right at the bottom of my street (Buxton Street) but before my time as I was born 1948. Spent many a happy hour playing on and around the old bus exchange, probably to the annoyance of the staff and travelling public. Retained the title of cheapest service in the country (old 1pence) for many years. Some memorable characters worked as drivers and conductors in those days, happy times.
Look at the guy working off a ladder. These days it would take weeks to carry out risk assessments, method statements, a safe system of working, and the a further couple of weeks to put the scaffolding up. In reality it would be finished off site and then dropped into place.
