Here is an undated photograph of Alderman Alfred Mattison, Mayor of Middlesbrough.
I am the great granddaughter of Alfred Mattison’s sister Jane. My mother (Jane’s granddaughter) emigrated to New Zealand in 1943 along with her mother We have a large mounted copy of the photo of Uncle Alf in his mayoral robes (the same as the one which appears in this article).
I would like to express my thanks for this information which bears out stories I heard in childhood, about Uncle Alf and I will pass it on to cousins who still live in England and as a result, may visit your museum. Regards Diane Sweet
I am the Great, grt Grandaughter of his sister Esther. She married William Keating. I too have this picture. Also one of his wife Emily in her Mayoress garb, and Esther.

Hi Sabina, just saw your post re: Alfred Mattison, who is a decendant of mine. My mother is Grace Mattson born Hudswell, 1932, her father was Jonas Mattison. I have traced my family tree back to the late 1700s and am fascinated about our great grandparents William and Eleanor Mattison who ran an Inin and boarding house in Sunderland. I think they may have been cousins as Eleanor was born a Mattison. I met Meka when she was over visiting her mum and we have exchanged info re the Mattisons.b I am intending visiting the museum in Middlesbrough to view items relating to him.
