  1. Certainly there is a Mr John Downing trading at No 103 Corporation Rd during the 1890’s as a Stationery & Toy dealer. Looking at the above photograph it’s difficult to tell what merchandise is in the windows , but it certainly looks like ‘paper products’ (stationery) in the l/hand displays and there appear to be ‘hoops’ and balls , etc in the r/hand window along with periodicals held in the racks to the doorway.

    No 103 Corporation Rd was towards the Marton Rd end of Corporation Rd which culminates in the Borough Hotel (now Dr. Brown’s pub) and possibly directly opposite the two large former Co-op dept stores which still remain on that section, though now occupied as offices and the St Mary’s Centre
